Janith Liyanage looked in fine fettle against Bangladesh on Tuesday until he was hit wicket

A good batter is one that makes the bowler earn his wicket, which is why modes of dismissal such as run-outs evoke a special kind of disgust in batsmen. Yet, even that must pale in comparison to knowing you have disturbed your own stumps, as Janith Liyanage experienced in Pallekele on Tuesday.

Kusal Mendis answered his batting coach's calls for converting starts into a big score with a resounding century for Sri Lanka in the deciding ODI against Bangladesh, scoring 124 runs off just 114 deliveries. With Charith Asalanka giving company at the other end to score a half-century, the duo put together 124 runs for the fourth wicket to leave the hosts well placed at 224/4 with 10 overs remaining. However, the lower middle-order failed to back up their efforts as a collapse ensued, all their own doing after Janith Liyanage carelessly threw away his wicket.

Boasting a century and two fifties across five ODIs against the Tigers, Liyanage was beginning to get in the groove on Tuesday when he came up against Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 45th over. The Bangladesh skipper pitched the delivery back of a length, forcing Liyanage to go deep into the crease as he knocked the ball off his thighs towards the leg side for a single. However, in a shuffle that followed after the shot, Liyanage pushed deeper into the crease and ended up kicking the poles with his hind foot to dislodge the bails. The batter immediately realized his error as he begin to walk off while Jaker Ali bore a cheeky smile behind the stumps that soon turned into a laugh as he indicated to his teammates what had occurred.

Twitterati was amused.
