Bangladesh beat hosts Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs while Parvez Emon and Towhid Hridoy shone with half-centuries as the visitors levelled the three-match series.

Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in only his second ODI as Bangladesh registered their first win on their tour of Sri Lanka. Tanvir picked up 5/39 as he headlined the Tigers’ 16-run win over the hosts at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday.

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh got to 248 on the back of contrasting half-centuries from Parvez Hossain Emon and Towhid Hridoy. Parvez hit six fours and three sixes during his 69-ball 67 while Hridoy made a patient 51 off 69 balls. Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib's unbeaten cameo of 33 from 21 balls, which included two sixes and two fours, took the visitors close to the 250-run mark as they were bowled out with 25 balls to spare. Seamer Asitha Fernando was the pick among the hosts’ bowlers with an excellent spell of 4/35 from nine overs while leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga also chipped in with three wickets.

In reply, Sri Lanka could manage only 232 with wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis and Janith Liyanage standing out with half-centuries. Kusal smashed nine fours and a six during his quickfire 31-ball 56 before departing in the 12th over, while Liyanage fought hard to keep the Lankans in the game despite losing wickets at regular intervals at the other end. His innings of 78 off 85 balls was laced with seven fours and two sixes but the hosts’ resistance came to an end when he departed after a fighting partnership of 58 for the ninth wicket with Dushmantha Chameera. Bangladesh spinner Tanvir spun a web around the Sri Lankan batting lineup with an accurate five-wicket spell, which also included two maidens, while Tanzim ended with two wickets as the home team were bowled out in the penultimate over.
