ENG vs IND | Twitter in splits as deputy Pant chides skipper Gill to place full faith in him

Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill were involved in a hilarious exchange while batting for India against England at Edgbaston on Day 1 of the second Test

Hardly can one imagine a character like Rishabh Pant being dictated by the whims and fancies of any person, even if he is the skipper. Similarly, the wicket-keeper batter's dynamic with Shubman Gill was laid bare to the world at Edgbaston when the latter had to keep quiet in the face of taunts.

India headed into Tea at 182/3 on Day 1 of the second Test against England after a quiet session where they scored just 84 runs while losing Yashasvi Jaiswal following an authoritative knock of 87. The scalp had culminated as the result of gradual pressure built up by the hosts in the hour before Tea, a major facet of their plan being to keep Shubman Gill on strike and starve his younger counterpart the opportunity to keep the scorecard ticking. However, the Indian skipper was quick to adjust his plans once he realized the consequences of his playstyle as vice-captain Rishabh Pant joined him at the crease, with the changed strategy to keep rotating strike leading to a hilarious conversation between the two.

On the second ball of the 51st over, Gill turned a Shoaib Bashir offspinner around the corner and scampered for a single even as Ben Stokes closed in on the Kookaburra. However, the England captain failed to pick the Dukes up cleanly, allowing Rishabh Pant to reach home safely at the striker's end. Gill was quick to ask his partner whether he was comfortable with the run and upon receiving confirmation, shot back by asking Pant to keep calling for runs. However, the second-in-command immediately realized they were playing a risky game that could raise the scope of miscommunication, and made sure to banish all notions.

"Mana mat kariyo fir aise [Then don't deny the run when I call]," Pant hollered to his batting partner across the pitch, fostering complete trust between the duo. Twitterati was impressed and entertained.
