Interestingly, a controversial moment unfolded on the second ball of the 46th over in the first innings when the star Australian batter Travis Head was facing the star young Caribbean pacer Shamar Joseph. The WI pacer bowled a length delivery outside the off stump. Head threw his bat far away from his body, but the ball ended up getting the inside edge of the bat before heading towards the wicketkeeper, Shai Hope. Initially, at first sight, the ball looked to be carried by Hope, but later, it seemed to get a slight bounce before going into Hope’s gloves. Furthermore, the decision for the third umpire became more complex, and he declared Head not out due to the lack of conclusive evidence for the ball being carried. This controversial decision also kept Joseph away from a stunning five-wicket haul.
Shamar Joseph displayed an amazing bowling performance on the opening day of the game, scalping 4 wickets at just 46 runs in 16 overs. He ended up as the second leading wicket-taker among both teams on the first day. At the end of the day, the West Indies were also struggling at the score of 57/4 in 20 overs, with debutant Brandon King and skipper Roston Chase there in the middle at the time of stumps.
