SL vs BAN | Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal take Sri Lanka to strong position in second Test

‌Sri Lanka extended their advantage over Bangladesh with a 43-run lead at the end of proceedings on day two of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Thursday. Pathum Nissanka scored his second-consecutive century while Dinesh Chandimal scored a patient 93 as the hosts ended the day at 290/2.

Starting the day at their overnight score of 220/8, Bangladesh lasted 51 more balls to end their essay at 247 with Taijul Islam being the last batter to be dismissed after his fighting 33. Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando and left-arm spinner Sonal Dinusha picked up the remaining two wickets to end with spells of 3/51 and 3/22, respectively.

In response, the home team’s openers Nissanka and Lahiru Udara made full use of good batting conditions and favourable weather as Sri Lanka walked back for lunch without losing a wicket and the score reading 83. However, Udara was dismissed in the third over of the second session, for 40, after getting a good start. But Nissanka continued in full flow bringing up his fifty as the side also went past the 100-run mark. The opener, along with new batter Chandimal, sent the visitors on a leather hunt as Bangladesh could not get another wicket in the session. Chandimal completed his fifty with the pair also bringing up their century partnership as the hosts were placed at 190/1 at tea. In the last session too, the domination continued with Nissanka scoring his fourth hundred in Tests and Sri Lanka going past the visitors’ total. The Bangladesh bowlers finally had something to cheer for as off-spinner Nayeem Hasan dismissed Chandimal towards the end of the day. The number three batter scored 10 fours and a six during his knock before falling short of a deserving century by seven runs. However, Nissanka was still unbeaten on 146 with 18 fours as they ended the day at 290/2, a lead of 47 runs.
