Fast bowlers are often considered average fielders but Pat Cummins defied that with his superlative effort during the second Test between West Indies and Australia. The Aussie skipper ran across the pitch, put in a full-length dive to complete a one-handed catch to dismiss Keacy Carty.

‌Australia had a healthy lead of 254 runs at the end of the third day’s play against the West Indies in the second Test at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, Grenada. Former captain Steve Smith (71) and Cameron Green (52) scored fighting half-centuries to rescue Australia from a precarious 28/3 to 221/7 on a day where only 58.3 overs were possible due to persistent rains.

Australia had earlier in the previous day earned a valuable 33-run first innings lead as they restricted the hosts to 253. Off-spinner Nathan Lyon picked up 3/75 while pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood chipped in with two wickets each.

The Australian skipper introduced himself into the attack when the Windies were comfortably placed at 39/1 after eight overs. After conceding a single off the first ball, Cummins bowled an inswinger that pitched on a length outside off-stump before moving in to Keacy Carty. The West Indies batter got an inside edge while trying to defend it as the ball tossed up after ricocheting off his pads.

Cummins was quick to sense the edge as he continued from his delivery stride to dash across the pitch amid shouts of ‘catch it’ from the close-in fielders. The Aussie quick, realising that he was away from the ball, put in a full-length dive to get his right hand underneath the red cherry.

He completed a one-handed blinder to end in a Superman pose before throwing the ball up in jubilation. His teammates rushed to congratulate the splendid effort as Carty watched the proceedings unfold in horror.

That's a screamer!
