ICC World Cup 2019 | I have always seen cricket as a tool to create goodwill, says PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani has said that he had refused any requests that would harm relationships between India and Pakistan and wanted to keep the game as respectful as possible. He went on to criticize Star’s ad campaign saying that it breached the moral of equality.

In what is a highly anticipated fixture which would see arch rivals India and Pakistan clash in potentially the match of the group stages, several controversies have cropped up regarding moral borders being crossed by members of both facets. While first controversy rose around Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s military insignia on his wicket keeping gloves, which could have been problematic considering the tensions between the neighbouring countries, Pakistan players had reportedly sought permission to celebrate wickets against India in presumably a more radical manner than usual.

However, PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani spoke like a true ambassador of the game and delivered a respectful statement that highlights what the game actually stands for.

“You won’t get any spillover from the Pakistan side. They are there to play cricket, full stop. We don’t need to make gestures. I have always seen cricket as a tool to create goodwill and better understanding. We should keep it like this. It’s a sport. It’s a gentleman’s sport. That’s how it should be,” Mani assured while speaking to The Indian Express.

Another issue that has come to the fore is the advertisement rivalry across the border. While Pakistan released an ad which mimicked an Indian pilot who is considered to be a hero in the nation, India’s Star network gave a stern reply by continuing with the running gag ‘Mauka Mauka,’ disappointing a large number of people on both sides.

“I think this is for the ICC to take note. Star is the host broadcaster. They are not an Indian broadcaster, they are the broadcaster of the ICC. They should be fair to all teams. That (the teasers) is not part of cricket,” Mani was also quoted saying as he joined in on the criticism.

The two teams will face off on Sunday at the Old Trafford cricket ground.
